The Sins of the Fathers (or excuse me whilst I muse on my writing)

The next chapter is on the verge of being posted and work is underway on the final two chapters of the story.

When I started this story, I kept the timeline straightforward and, more importantly, the thing was plotted out. Ill heath and other issues have meant that six years later I still haven't finished it. Once I started to work on the final chapter (the two chapters are being written at the same time) I felt a real lifting of the burden of having two unfinished chapters and my thoughts started to turn to the next project.

HP fanfiction is a very different place now to where it was back in 2008. Most of the people I loved to read have either moved on or stopped writing (or are not publishing) and other fandoms don't really have much attraction for me. I am seriously considering finishing 12 Months, having recently discovered old emails where I had discussed the plot points for the story from March onwards. There would be four possibly five chapters required to finish it so on paper it would be not too difficult. The drawback for me would be the lack of readers. Rightly or wrongly, I've always been someone who is very motivated by reviews and producing 20,000- 30,000 or so new words for limited feedback may lead to motivation issues. This then raises the question as to why do I write? If I write for reviews then where does that lead you if your chosen fandom is less active or you are writing original fiction.

So, on with the next two chapters and here's hoping that its all finished before the year ends.

    The fandom isn't completely

The fandom isn't completely inactive and there are at least a few of the old crowd (so to speak) still keeping an eye on things... There are also a small number of decent writers still plugging away at new HP fanfiction. (Kokopelli just finished posting an excellent Harry/Daphne story on FFA and Brennus just finished posting his latest Harry/Ginny story on ffn )
I'm confident that you would get a decent amount of feedback if you posted your new material to fanfiction.net. (though of course the quality of said feedback is bound to be highly variable)

As others have said here and

As others have said here and elsewhere, hp fandom isnt dead. Though it certainly has changed. There's a whole new generation of writers who think that everything they write is original :)

I know I am still plunking away, though much less active than I used to be. And with that, I certainly get your comments of reviews and unfinished works. I have my own list of unfinished works that people still yell at me about, (which I'm still working on, but have long since decided not to post anything of until finished, or nearly.)

As for reviews, it's interesting. I think lots of writers conflate the idea of readers and reviews. Personally, I write b/c I want readers to be happy, but it's quite fufilling to get reviews telling me I've succeeded. It's hard to stay motivated, to know people are reading, without reviews as a 'measurement' of sorts. No reviews, however, doesnt mean no readers. I still read a fair amount, and I suck at leaving reviews.

And with that in mind, there are still quite a few of us around that have all the old guard in our watch lists. We may not say anything, but know that when you put out your chapters, we're here reading and enjoying.

I've been reading Brennus, including the latest story. They are good stories, but lack real depth. I don't mean that as a criticism, but an observation on the style of the stories. Kokopelli, well, we tried working together on 12 Months many years ago, and that didn't go well. Harry/Daphne is a curious pairing. I remember several H&G writers trying that pairing as they moved on from pairing Harry with Ginny. It's essentially H/OC as so little is know about her from the books. You could argue that Ginny is the same given how little we know, but we can infer a lot from the books. Pairing Harry with Daphne also appeared to remove the baggage of pre-HBP H&G which tended to be more than a bit mushy.

As for FF.net. I think the some of the reviews would be, er, very interesting :)

I agree that HP fandom isn't dead, but as someone with very specific tastes, there's not a lot around. I do read a lot, but its been a while since I've found something I could really get my teeth into.

I find myself leaving reviews mainly when there are very few reviews or the author has posted following a long lay off. Often its no more than 'thanks for posting and looking forward to more.'

    as always....

....I am eagerly awaiting more! Has it really been 6 years? The tone and content of this fic is so different from the majority of H/G fics out there, that it's kept me intrigued all this time.

Yeah, its really been six years- it shocked me too. Should be posted any day now and work is progressing well on the final two chapters. I'm trying to get it written before the year is over. If it takes longer to post, then fair enough, but I'm looking to move on and this being unfinished has always irked me.
