Pranks

Pranks

Something that never ceases to amaze me when reading HP fanfic... in a world where the Imperius Curse is considered unforgivable, it is somehow considered socially acceptable to prank people with equivalent magic which forces the victim into doing something against their will?

Perhaps the best known example is Harry's prank on the Weasley boys in Jeco's This Means War, (was this the first such example?) but I've seen it many times over the years and having just come across it again I have to wonder if I'm the only one who finds this odd...

I think pranking or rather prank wars, are/is a joke that has worn very thin in fanfic, especially given the cruel nature of a lot of them I don't think Tim was the first one to do this as he was more heavily involved in Buffy fanfic before HP. If you want history I think you need to speak to people who were part of the original Gryffindor Tower as I'm a GoF arrival. :)

Mind you, we have a set of books where Ginny is praised by Slughorn for cursing a fellow student with a very nasty curse so perhaps that set the standard.
